As educators, we not only have a deep impact on our students, but also the people around them. Education as a whole is much more than just learning, it shapes who we are as people and informs how we interact with the world around us. As teachers it is our responsibility to not only embrace diversity, but celebrate it in ourselves and each other. School and more specifically the art classroom should be a space where students feel safe physically and emotionally. Sometimes, having the courage to express yourself at a young age can be difficult, but in art, we have the power to make it easy. In my classroom, freedom of expression is paramount, as it is at the core of all artmaking.

As educators, we must consider our students’ needs and adjust accordingly. Through differentiation and modification, education can and should be accessible to all students. Meeting our students where they are at developmentally, socially, and emotionally is an important piece of my pedagogy. All students are capable of meaningful visual expression. In my teaching, I strive to learn from my students as much as they learn from me.

As AI becomes more integrated into our society, cultivating skills like decision making, creativity, and critical thinking are more important than ever. Teaching as a whole is about life skills and connection building. In the grand scheme of things, what we take away from our education is not how to find the area of a circle or how to paint the Mona Lisa, but instead we learn how to set and follow deadlines, how to connect with the people in our lives, and how to interact in a meaningful way with the world we live in. What’s most important in teaching and learning is the things that stay with us long after we finish our formal education.
